We had to program directly using zeroes and ones, and we were encouraged to use mostly ones, because, being circular in shape, zeroes took up more space than the flat vertical stroke of the one.

Due to an oversight, K&R C could only compute the trigonometric values of whole-numbered radians. worse, nobody could fix it, because all the available polyester filling was bought by the pillow industry. (see: 1971 north american pillow shortage)

Compiling things for different processors to reduce overhead has become a lost art by today since everyone decided that hard-disk space and free RAM will wither if they aren't filled up most of the time. Also, a quick calculation of a result is not important since computers are fast enough these days.
